The Element Of Surprise!
The Periodic Table arranges all the chemical elements according to their atomic number, electron configuration and chemical properties. It was first published by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 who chose to commemorate this extraordinary event in scientific history by producing an actual periodic table - he infused small amounts of all 118 elements into the tree in his back garden then chopped it down and made it into the table which he and his family used in their kitchen for many years. It went missing at the turn of the century and was presumed lost forever but against all the odds it turned up over 100 years later on the BBC TV programme 'Antiques Roadshow' and was subsequently bought by an anonymous collector of scientific memorabilia for an undisclosed sum. It's current whereabouts are unknown.
