Choose Your Weapon - Guitar
The first electrically amplified guitar was invented by George Beauchamp in 1931 to cater for jazz guitarists who were having to compete in volume with orchestras and horn sections. This involved converting an acoustic guitar by adding a pick-up - it wasn't until nine years later that North Carolina State University physics professor Sidney Wilson reasoned that an electric instrument could have a solid rather than hollow body. His electric guitar won first prize at the North Carolina State Engineering Fair in 1940, but he didn't patent his invention and various companies subsequently developed the instrument that we know today.
