A Little Bit Of Histoire
The Mexico Olympics are most memorable for the achievements of the gold and bronze medalists Tommie Smith and John Carlos (respectively) who took to the winners podium bare footed and famously raised a black-gloved fist as the star spangled banner was played. Both men were members of the Olympic Project for Human Rights but were banned from the Olympic village after the protest and, astonishingly, suspended from the USA team. It’s well worth noting though, that the same Tommie Smith was later inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame and was named “Sportsman of the Millennium” by the Black Sports Hall of Fame.
