On the 30th March 1910 Hyacinth Henchard, the wife of The Mayor of Hitchin was found by police in a 'distressed condition' next to a signpost near a bridge over The River Hiz. Both the sign post and her pony-trap were badly damaged. Ignoring the claims by many of his political foes that his wife had in fact been drunk The Mayor, who also happened to be a Justice Of The Peace, prosecuted the signpost for assult. It was remanded in custody at the local police station for one week while students at Cambridge University attempted to raise a case for the defence. The signpost was eventually given an absolute discharge.
