In 1801 Middlesborough was a hamlet of 4 farmhouses with a population of 25 people. With the discovery of iron ore in the area it grew in size at a extraordinary rate, to such an extent that when soon-to-be Prime Minister William Gladstone visited in 1862 he referred to it as an 'infant Hercules'. These days it's known locally as Ironopolis, and is the birthplace of such diverse characters as football legend Brian Clough, rock singer Paul Rodgers and the infamously sweary comic Roy 'Chubby' Brown.
