The Honey bee, there are 44 species of them, that’s quite a few. I will now try and impress you with other wonderful bee and beekeeping related facts. Honey bees belong to the genus Apis, which is Latin for well, bee. Honey bees are the only bee to have hairy compound eyes, they can cannibalize their own broods when stressed and they can fly at speeds of 15 miles per hour. There are two species of bee commonly used for beekeeping which are Apis mellifera and Apis cerana. Beekeeping is also thought to have existed since 900 B.C. or if you’re a fan of the Christian bible it started 3000 years ago. Beekeeping has become so advanced these days that you can transport your hive, so, no longer are the bees stuck with the same old field of flowers.
