Here are a few things that you might not know about Colchester:-
It was named Colne Ceaster by the Saxons - the River Colne runs through the town, and 'ceaster' is the Saxon name for a group of buildings.
In the 15th and 16th Centuries every man was required by law to practice Archery.
In the 18th century Colchester became famous for candied eryngo (sea holly) roots. As one writer put it - 'to the Colchester oysters let me subjoin another thing which Colchester is famous for viz. the excellent sweetmeats made of eryngo roots'.
The large red brick water tower was built in 1882/3. It's known locally as Jumbo.
In March 2011, Balcony Shirts teamed up with The Colchester Circle magazine to create a t-shirt design for Colchester. When readers were asked to come up with a suitable slogan, it was six-year old Ally who came up with the winning phrase.
