Similes well and truly are like metaphors, it’s been scientifically proven and you should trust me, I’m a scientist. All that stops them being genetically identical twins is that a simile uses the words as or like where as metaphors don’t, simple ah?! I think to help explain it we need to consult a master of the English language and man renowned for his way with words Mr William Shakespeare; he often used similes and metaphors showing you how long they’ve been around.
